Truckee & Tahoe, California
I grew up close to the Tahoe, Truckee, California area in a little town not far from there. It’s simply beautiful with something to do all year round. It has 4 distinct seasons; depending on where you’re at, you’ll likely get a good amount of snow in the winter. Truckee is located right off the main highway 80 connecting the central California heartland to the city of Reno, Nevada. There is a crystal clear, cold mountain lake close by, a ton of ski resorts, bike trails, campgrounds, lots of pine trees, downhill bicycle races, and microbreweries. What more can a person ask for?
It’s also close to Reno, Nevada. Many years ago, Reno wasn’t all that. But with the migration of people from the population centers in California, Reno started to get investments and an influx of people looking for a cheaper cost of living and less hustle and bustle. Today Reno is a thriving, modern city with large production factories. It’s also one of my favorite places. I love the Riverwalk downtown, the view of Mount Rose, the hippy vibe mixed with cowboy vibe, mixed with some very high-end neighborhoods. It boasts one of the best art installations anywhere in the world downtown with its very own Burning Man Art Park, featuring pieces that were at one time collecting dust on The Playa. There’s also a Burning Man hostel where burners stay before heading out to join the festivities each year.
The only trick is that it’s located smack dab on Donner Pass, a tricky piece of highway in the winter. It will often shut down or have tire chain requirements. I remember one time driving home from a concert in Sacrament, heading up to the pass, only able to see the car directly in front of me a few feet away, windshield wipers working hard to brush away the snow that was pouring down. I did make it home but thought about posting up for the night on the side of the road more than a few times.
And Lake Tahoe. A short ride from Truckee is one of the most magnificent places in our great nation. Stunning, emerald green, brisk, but worth a quick dip in the summer to beat the heat. If you haven’t visited Truckee or Tahoe, do yourself a favor and book the trip now.
